Coliforms In Well Water
If you receive a test result indicating elevated coliform levels it is very important to disinfect the well immediately before consuming water or installing any water treatment systems.
Installing water treatment systems such as reverse osmosis sytsems, green sand filters or water softeners before the well is properly disinfected can contaminate the equipment requiring them to be disinfected as well.
Always have the water retested after treating for coliforms. Depending on the level of coliforms multiple treatments may be required to properly disinfect the well. Keeping retreating until you recieve a passed test result.
Remember that you may not have removed the source and coliforms can return. Installing a UV disinfection system is a good safeguard but the well water should be retested regularily.
